East Tasman Bay

The east side of Tasman Bay is an often under-rated area for fishing and diving, containing crayfish in good numbers, snapper and kingfish in the summer, along with all the usual species found else where.

Fishing
The main winter species targeted are blue cod, terakihi and gurnard with the
snapper, trevally, kahawai and kingfish coming in during the warmer months. Terakihi tend to be found on the more exposed sand lines and off the points.

Land Based Fishing in Nelson Area

Spearfishing
An often under-rated area for spearfishing, the biggest factor can be the visibility. Shore diving from Cable Bay is a popular option, producing moki,
butterfish terakihi, crayfish, snapper and kingfish and sometimes the odd paua if you’re lucky.

Scuba Diving

Either diving the new marine reserve or hunting for crayfish there is good scuba diving to be had. Also, with regular charters and the ease of shore diving, it’s a great place for anyone to access.
