Improving Breath Hold

No bubbles

A very common question we get asked is how do you improve your breath hold?

The easy answer is spend as much time as possible in the water.

Your breath hold is influenced by lots of things, some of which just take time and experience to master so we've decided to list a few factors.

Experience
This counts for a lot, if you know the environment you are in, know your gear and have a bottom/surface routine worked out this will give you an advantage because you’ll be relaxed and calm in the water, thus lowering your heart beat and letting you be more in tune with what’s going on.

Relax!

It’s important to relax, be calm to lower your heartbeat, thus giving you longer bottom times.

Technique

Knowing the best ways to equalise, the best descent and ascent methods for the type of diving you are doing is a huge factor in a successful free dive. For example, knowing not to kick when you’ve begun your decent and your legs are in the air greatly improves your bottom time.

Proper Gear
Having gear that works every time is a major factor and advantage when diving, while you don’t need the most expensive gear you need to make sure your gear is in good working order well before you go for a dive, so you have a chance to replace or repair damaged gear before it’s too late.
