Kahawai
Scientific name
Arripis trutta
Eating
One of the top fish to eat smoked, also nice fried.
Habitat
During the warmer months schools of kahawai herd fish into work ups, which are easily spotted from the “boiling” water and sometimes birds diving.
Fishing
A great fighter on light tackle. They love small fish lures. Look for any work ups, if you see one it is quite likely that kahawai are not far away. Fishing river mouths can be successful. More commonly caught during warmer months. remember to gut and gill as soon as possible to keep fish in best condition.
Spearfishing
Sometimes spearfishermen get schooled by kahawai and have the chance to shoot a couple. Another method is to jump in on the outside of a work up and shoot them. Remeber to gut and gill as soon as possible to keep fish in best condition.
