Pelorus Sound

Crayfish 5Pelorus SoundSlender Roughy

Pelorus Sound has a variety of different habitats from the inner sounds areas like Duncan Bay and Hellum Cove to exposed areas such as East Entry Point and Forsyth Island.

Fishing
The inner areas of Pelorus Sound such as Hellum Cove, Mahau Sound and Beatrix Bay are very well known and popular locations for catching snapper (particularly around the mussel farms). The outer areas provide perfect habitat for blue cod and terakihi as well as kingfish, kahawai and trevally during the summer months. There is also very good gurnard fishing to be had over sandy bottoms particularly on the scallop beds.

Spearfishing
The outer part of Pelorus Sound is a great area for catching the “table” species (butterfish, blue moki, blue cod) as well as the occasional kingfish and kahawai in the summer. One of the major problems with the Pelorus Sound area is the consistently average visibility, which can put some people off, while not everyone has access to a boat capable of making it to some of the islands just out of Pelorus Sound it is well worth the trip.

Carpet SharkScuba Diving
Not as well known for its crayfish as other area’s they are still here in good numbers. Better known for its scallop beds, the main problem can be the depth of the beds normally at around 15-25 metres deep.
